Using hypnosis and coaching, teenagers and children are better equipped to relax, and take charge of their actions, thoughts, and emotions. Sometimes referred to as "Pediatric Hypnosis," this is a nonthreatening and efficient way to help children and teens build confidence, improve coping skills, and overcome a wide range of problems. And, they can use these tools for a lifetime.
Hypnosis effectively engages the subconscious mind—that part connected with behavior patterns, emotions, and memories—which is the seat of the imagination. Children are so adept at using their imagination that they are said to be in a state of hypnosis much of the time. They are masters at daydreaming, playing "pretend," and engaging in "make believe." That ability allows them to easily visualize, sense, or feel the things that are suggested to help them resolve an issue. Teenagers tend to be more analytical; but their curiosity about hypnosis, their imagination, and desire to make changes generally make them good candidates for this modality.
Your Child can be Programmed for Success
There are so many factors that can negatively influence children, and make them feel inadequate, uncomfortable, and unable to achieve their goals. This process focuses on building their belief in themselves, practicing and reinforcing successful behaviors, and letting them "experience" the benefits. Imagine what a wonderful foundation this is - and how it will prepare them to travel on life’s journey. Young people who are introduced to hypnosis and coaching (sometimes referred to as hypnotherapy), and apply themselves tend to . . .
The following lists demonstrate some of the issues that bring children and teens to my office for hypnosis.
Typical Issues Addressed with Children
- Be more relaxed
- Feel competent and capable
- Focus more easily
- Feel empowered
- Creatively problem solve
- Feel equipped to handle challenges
Sample Issues Addressed with Adolescents (in addition to above)
- Fears (e.g., doctors, dentists, being alone)
- Habits (e.g., thumb sucking, nail biting)
- Symptomatic Relief (e.g., asthma, itching)
- Sleep Problems
- Anger Management
Determining if Your Child is a Good Candidate for Hypnosis / Coaching
It’s important that your child recognize that there is a problem and sees the benefits in resolving it. He or she must be a willing participant.
Your child must be able to sit quietly for at least 10 minutes at a time.
There needs to be a willingness to spend a few moments each day practicing certain techniques and / or listening to a CD.
Your child should be able to follow simple instructions.
Appointments are Interesting and Fun
During our initial session, I will meet with the child and parent / guardian and casually get to know the child—favorite pastimes, interests, etc. I’ll discuss and demonstrate the power of the imagination, using some fun activities. I will explain the process and what to expect. This is done in a comfortable, confidential, and nonthreatening setting. A program packet will be provided and briefly reviewed. Questions will be asked concerning lifestyle, general health, and the challenges we’ll be working on. Some of this is done with the parent present, and some when the parent is in another area. The hypnotic induction, suggestions, and techniques will all be customized to your child’s needs. Kids enjoy these sessions—and they love feeling empowered. Three to six sessions are generally adequate for most issues, and I’m committed to helping your child in the shortest time possible.
The approach with adolescents/teens is more similar to the approach used with adults. In the case of children and teens, a parent must be present to authorize the process. Also, there are times when authorization from a physician or licensed mental health professional may be required.
